History:

A traditional use of the red petals for dye has been made since the 15th c.P.Dubium L. is used medicinally as is, P.rhoea :It is a cultivar in Flanders and in germany. Foliage was once used as a vegetable, and the syrup prepared from the petals was used in soups and hot cereals.Its principal constituent is its red colouring matter, of the fresh petals:Rhoeadic and papaveric acids.

Constituents:

Pigments comprising the anthocyanins,mecocyanin,cyanidol mucilage,traces of the crystalline alkaloids, rhoeadin,rhoeagenine,rhoearubine,mildly narcotic, some controversy over possible morphine content.

Uses:

Sedative, anti-spasmodic,diaphoretic,for colic,anxiety,t9nsillitis,bronchitis,irritable coughs, coulour in: medicine and wine, culinary oil for cooking.

Contra-Indications: NONE.
