DOES ANDROGRAPHIS PANICULATA GUARD THE LIVER AGAINST ISONIAZID INDUCED HEPATOTOXICITY?

G.M. PADMA RAO, K.K. SRINIVASAN AND ABDUL SALAM Dept. of Pharmacology. Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

Andrographis paniculata is one of the constituents of ‘Hepatogard’ and many other formulations used for various liver disorders. Andrographolide the active constituent of Andrographis paniculata was found to be effective against carbon tetra chloride (CC14 ), paracetamol (Pcml), galactosamine (GAIN) and alcohol induced liver damage.
Probing into the mechanism of action, andrographolide was shown to reduce lipid peroxidation and protein degradation caused by lsoniazid (INH) generated free radicals.
