Aromatherapy and Pregnancy


Those wonderful collections of aromatherapy oils, that you have been used to applying for so many reasons!
When you purchase a bottle of the brilliant, natural scents, there is no hand-out which will, in some way, give you an idea that you should avoid the use of some essential oils, for certain reasons.
The oils are made from pure, natural herbs, flowers or spices, and you will, if you conscientiously read about the use of aromatherapy, find that some oils are not recommended for people with, say, diabetes, epilepsy, and, especially, during gestation (the months of your pregnancy).

PREGNANCY TREATMENT

There are treatments with essential oils, which are recommended for use during pregnancy.
This article will illuminate information from some newer books on the subject, as well as from the net.
The first section will list CAUTIONS, with regard to aromatherapy use, and ,after that, a section will deal with Recommended Oils.


CAUTION!

During the first five months, when your personling is newer, and more fragile, as well as the condition of your own reshaping body, avoiding the following aromatherapy oils is mor eimportant to you and baby.

These essential oils have strong diuretic properties or a tendency to induce menstruation.

IF YOU SUFFER SOME HEALTH SENSITIVITY, OR A HISTORY OF MISCARRIAGE

When there has been a histroy of miscarriage, also avoid these essential oils: (surprisingly):

LAVENDER and also CHAMOMILE

Usually, these two oils are considered excellent for your pregnancy, but caution should be applied, if you have , sadly, suffered from problems leading to miscarriage(s).

BELOW, A LIST OF POTENTIALLY TOXIC ESSENTIAL OILS, HAVING STRONG ABORTIVE QUALITIES (That is, they could be part of the cause for miscarriage)

When you feel that you care to select safe aromatherapy, most of the Aromatherapy Counsellors will tell you to be sure,to seek out the oils having the most pure ingredients, Fixatives and synthetic carrier oils, as well as synthetic scents, can also be damaging.
Don't be fooled by little dollar store potpourri scent bottles. They are not for your anatomical use at all. These scents are probably synthetics. Some of them are lamp oil.

LABOUR

Jasmine

"Jasmine is noted for its properties in preparing the uterine muscles for labour.

AVOID using jasmine during the first eight months of pregnancy then use daily as a massage oil on the abdomen and lower back. In the delivery room it will help to promote focus and strength. Whereas rose is regarded as the queen of aromatherapy oil, jasmine is the king. The oil is extracted from millions of tiny flowers hand-picked before dawn."

Labour Blend


50 ml base oil (grapeseed/sweet almond/coconut)
2 drops jasmine essential oil
2 drops rose essential oil
2 drops neroli essential oil

WHEN RECOMMENDED FOR USE DURING PREGNANCY


Paying attention to the above warning about Chamomile and Lavender, if you have worries or pre-established difficulties with pregnancy,in the list below, Chamomile and Lavender will figure again, but this time, you are advised to use some of these in low doses.

USE IN LOW DOSES

IF YOU ARE STRONG: THESE OILS ARE USEFUL, BUT USE SPARINGLY.

  2. BERGAMOT
  3. GRAPEFRUIT
  4. LAVENDER

  7. ORANGE
  8. ROSE
  9. Patchouli
  10. SANDALWOOD
  11. SPEARMINT
  12. TEA TREE
  13. VETIVER


If you care to explore these written works in the public library, or to explore the internet for remedies, there are many comforting and practical recipes for the relief of the number of symptoms, which seem to be par for the course during pregnacy months.

The work from which I have derived the above information has two pages of tips on oil combinations and treatments for these normal problems:
BACKACHE, MORNING SICKNESS, HEARTBURN, SORE BREASTS, CONSTIPATION, SLEEP PROBLEMS, STRETCH MARKS, SWOLLEN ANKLES, VARICOSE VEINS.


A lovely idea for conscious and conscientious use of aromatherapy during labour offers a way to create a relaxing atmosphere:
In the labour room, use a few drops of lavender, or try rose, neroli, or ylang ylang for strength during the hard haul.
Any of these oils will assist with contractions, when rubbed into the lower back.
When labour is distressingly and tediously slow (I've been there!) try massaging with marjoram essential oil across the abdomen, or else, apply the same oil as a compress, to stimulate contractions.

It's up to you, to ask whether you might use these comforting essentials, when visiting the hospital, so there is no hardship or misunderstanding, either way.

Although this article is meant to offer ideas for your own research, my advice to you as an older and wiser parent is to pay attention to the way that you feel. if you have become desperately unhappy, hysterical , angry, frustrated, hallucinatory, anxious, and almost immobile from feelings of depression, run and see your GP pronto. Do not let the feelings slide into a pttern for yourself, or you will lose out on the fleeting joy of watching those precious first months of your babys' life.
Whatever your inner self is telling you about your feelings, if you have sunk into a "state" after pregnancy, it is really your hormonal being getting back to normal, as well as your body, which has given its all, like a flowering or fruiting plant at its peak.
Even plants take a rest, and tend to be less showy from blossoms and shining, ripe fruits.
Given some understanding and rest, both you and your dearest will recover together, in a week to a few months.

An author, Online, of an article about scientific evidence with regard to the use of aromatherapy during pregnancy does have this to say:


To paraphrase, she wonders whether it would be more advisable not to use any essential oils during pregnancy.
However, some aromatherapy essential oils have been considered, through research upon pregnant animals, to be 'abortifascient', or while you are avoiding Juniper, tuck that gin bottle away for the same reason. It does not rhyme with healthful gestation for the nation!
This article also lists some essential oils that are beneficial, without sanctions about the use of Lavender. The writer advises that all use should be discussed with your physician (this is sound advice)
